Climbing Wall Award Training Courses

The Climbing Wall Award Training Course, is a two day course. The course covers the syllabus laid out in the CWA Handbook and takes place at two different climbing walls to give a variety of different climbing structures and set ups. Once gained the award qualifies the holder to supervise groups at indoor climbing walls and artificial structures. The award is for anyone who wants to work teaching climbing in an indoor environment.

To attend the course you need to registered for the Climbing Wall Award with Mountain Training, to do so you need to:
  • Have a genuine interest in climbing and the supervision of groups on climbing walls.
  • Have at least six months experience of using a variety of climbing walls.
  • Be not less than seventeen years of age at the date of registration. Candidates may undertake training after their seventeenth birthday but may not attend an assessment course until after their eighteenth birthday.
  • Be an individual or club member (of an affiliated club) of a Mountaineering Council.


What is taught?

This two day course is a combined CWA with additional Abseil module and will closely follow the syllabus of these schemes. The abseil element will take place at Indy Climbing Wall on the afternoon of Day 2. In particular it will look at the practical techniques of group management and personal climbing skills required when leading and supervising groups in climbing walls and on artificial structures. The course will concentrate on areas that the board feels it is difficult for candidates to learn on their own. During the two days the following aspects of the syllabus will be covered:

  • The climbing wall environment
  • Risk Assessment
  • Group management
  • Injury prevention warming up
  • Bouldering warm up / games
  • Practical use of the wall
  • Equipment
  • Analysing movement and coaching strategies for teaching basic movement skills
  • Structuring sessions
  • Short and long term climbing development
  • Personal climbing / leading
  • Artificial structures
  • Top roping
  • Abseiling

 The course will begin at 10.00am on (the dates booked) and end at 18.00pm
